POST-EXAM SYNDROME
POST-EXAM SYNDROME is a complex of symptoms suffered by a student after exam due to brain overload, esp after 3 or more sleepless nights.
it is characterized by the following:
1) hyperactivity- restlessness, unable to sit properly, tend to walk around, go shopping, eat, cook….anything but to rest
2) 120% wakefullness - you might expect somebody who had studied 48 hours straight to feel tired….but the situation is totally opposite.you will be more awake than before your exam. this could be explained due to hyperactivity of the brain, which cannot stop thinking of the exams, and probably due to elevated emotion (excitement or dissapointment) due to the outcome of it. the student might sleep less than when he sleeps before the exam..
3)lack of motivation — means lacking the urge to study for the next 1 - 2 days…..this is time wasting on one hand, esp if u need to get on going with the next subject and time is running short…..but on the other hand, it’s important for the brain rest, for digestion of the previous studies material, converting it from short term memory to long term memory and to allocate new space in the brain for new information. motivation is the desire to achieve requirements. in this case it’s the social requirement. after exam, our previous requirement is achieved, and thus there’ll be a temporary declining of motivation, untill the next requirement is found….eg. the need to pass the next exam….( but according to arthur shoppenheur, this temporary relieve from wanting is a source of human happiness)\
p/s: author describe the feeling as emptiness…
4)urge to spend money — this symptom is not constant. it’s another way to release the stress accumulated during exam session and a way to reward oneself for the higher motivation in the future.
5)"seems to know everything" syndrome– it’s a wierd phenomenon. before exam even if you study everything up to several times, it might seem that your brain is blank before the exam.but it’s totally opposite after it. suddenly u feel like u know everything, and that u are as good as the professor who taught u….you can like extract the information u studied anytime….but this phenomenon is inhibited when u have another exam coming and you pay ur full attention to it…if unhibited, it usually last about 1-2 weeks, inhibited, probably 3-4 days..
6) relate to all aspect in life— whatever subject you study, you find that you can relate it to any aspect of your life. this is closely related to the previous symptom. somethings that doesn’t relate at all can resemble something to you….you start to notice and observe those things u never observe before and relate it to the subject u study….the lifespan of this symptom is same as the previous one…
these symptoms are relatively temporary, but nevertheless crucial for the developement of the student in his/her academic years…left untreated, it may lead to insomnia, lack of concentration and attention later on, loosing appetite, and other complications…
the best way to overcome this syndrome is to meditate, tell your brain to rest, and build up new motivation fast.
THIS SICKNESS CANNOT BE CURED BY DRUGS. IT SHOULD BE TREATED SPIRITUALLY/MENTALLY. TAKING ANY DRUGS WOULD PROBABLY CAUSE FURTHER DAMAGE.
